Oh Turmeric, You’re Terrific

Winter. The illustrious time of year where the days are short, the nights are long, and we’re inside with loved ones for many a soirée sharing love, laughter – and inevitably germs. Cold and flu season is upon us and it seems no matter how many times we wash our hands, a bout of sickness is nearly impossible to escape.

There is hope, however, in a cup of turmeric tea. This blend of cinnamon, nettle, ginger, fennel, turmeric and chai spices makes for a delicious pick-me-up. If you haven’t incorporated turmeric into your life yet, here are several reasons to start:

  1. It Boosts Immunity
Whether you’re trying to avoid a cold or are already under the weather, drinking turmeric tea is a delicious way to pack your body with the immune-boosting properties it needs. According to Purple Carrot, “Turmeric bolsters the immune system by increasing the immunomodulating capacity of the body.” Drink a cup of turmeric tea throughout flu season or during periods of stress to keep your immune system in check.

  2. It Reduces Inflammation
There are hundreds of studies that speak of curcumin, the compound in turmeric that fights inflammation (1). Further research also tells us that ibuprofen and aspirin, two of the popular anti-inflammatory drugs, are not as effective as curcumin in turmeric when it comes to fighting inflammation (2). These properties of turmeric also make it a good treatment for arthritis and gout symptoms (3).
  1. It Promotes Sleep
Curcumin can also improve mood – and this invariably improves your sleep as well. Intake of curcumin is also found to relieve anxiety and prevent oxidative damage – factors that might otherwise cause sleep issues. Healthline says, “Slip this super spice into your bedtime ritual to relax, improve mood, help depression, and potentially lower your anxiety levels.”

  2. It Improves Skin
Turmeric benefits for skin include increasing the “glow and luster” of the skin, speeding up wound healing, and calming the pores to decrease acne and acne scarring. Natural Living Ideas shared it can also correct oily skin, protect against sun damage, counteract the effects of aging, prevent skin cancer and treat chronic skin conditions.

These are just a few of the benefits of turmeric – there are so many more. Do take note that curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. Healthline states that, “It helps to consume black pepper with it, which contains piperine, a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2,000%.” Luckily, our Terrific Turmeric includes black peppercorns to help you get the maximum health impact from each cup of tea. Plus, it’s so delicious that the health benefits are just an added bonus!
