How Tea can help you catch more ZZZ's.

We have heard so much about how sleep is one of the pillars of optimal health.  But how can tea really help?

Unfortunately, about 30% of the population suffers from some sort of insomnia or the inability to fall asleep.  For centuries, herbal teas have been used around the world as a natural sleep remedy. They are a very popular beverage when it comes time to relax and unwind.  Modern research also backs the use of these teas, and their effectiveness as a sleep aid.

For years, chamomile tea has been used as a natural remedy to reduce inflammation, decrease anxiety and treat insomnia.

In fact, chamomile is commonly regarded as a mild tranquilizer or sleep inducer.

Its calming effects may be attributed to an antioxidant called apigenin, which is found in abundance in chamomile tea. Apigenin binds to specific receptors in your brain that may decrease anxiety and initiate sleep

There are many factors that can interrupt a healthy sleep pattern. For example, The typical western diet (think lots of processed foods, sugar, and alcohol) leads to what is called “chronic inflammation” in the body. Many doctors believe this inflammation is a silent killer, because it sets the body up to be the perfect host for diseases like heart disease (1), cancer (2), Alzheimer’s, and even obesity (3).

That’s why you want to do everything you can to bring down inflammation, including eating more unprocessed whole vegetables and fruit along with specific spices (like turmeric) and herbs known to fight inflammatory responses.

At its base, turmeric reduces inflammation, lowers your blood sugar levels, helps your liver to detoxify, boosts your immune system and eases your digestive system – all of which help you to get to sleep faster, to sleep better, and to wake up feeling refreshed.

The easiest way to incorporate these herbal teas into your routine, is to brew a cup before bed each night.  We like to switch and swap between the PJ Soirée and the Terrific Turmeric, depending on our mood. You truly can’t go wrong with either one!
